The cinema and change of use
A change of use of the building from a cinema to a Place of Worship.
Odeon are the tenants of Citygate Church, who own the building.
No. Odeon made the voluntary commercial decision to surrender their lease, which had many years left to run. Please see the official Odeon statement below:
"Odeon Cinemas has entered a voluntary commercial agreement with its landlord and will cease operating from the Beckenham cinema at the end of November 2026. The cinema will continue to welcome guests as usual until then."
Other operators have been approached. We will supply full documentation on this to Bromley Council as part of the planning application. So far, there is no interest from any other operator.
The auditorium will be fitted with the necessary technology to show films.
Citygate and the community
We are in a very fortunate position to have a growing congregation in Beckenham, our home for the past 25+years.
It will be retained for Church use.
The building is close to Citygate’s existing premises and offers the opportunity to host Church activities as a place of worship in a larger and more suitable building than we have at present.
Citygate welcome all members of the community to take part in Church activities.
This is something we are listening to the local community on during this consultation process. We encourage everybody to engage with our survey at www.beckenham.site/shareviews.

The new venue is being designed with every age in mind, with spaces for children and young people, and facilities that are accessible and welcoming for families and older residents. Everyone is very welcome to join us at Citygate Church.
The building and proposals
We are aware of our responsibilities as custodians of this listed building and will take our responsibilities seriously. We are working closely with a respected heritage consultant throughout the process.
It will be a stunning space that reflects the grand nature of the building, combining its historic character with cutting-edge new facilities to provide the church and local community with an excellent place to meet, reflect and worship.
It is our intention to remove unsightly additions, partitions etc , reconstruct the stage area, introduce lifts for the first time and bring about significant energy-efficient procedures to reduce the building's carbon footprint.
Traffic, events and the High Street
Plans are in place to ensure that traffic and parking is managed effectively and efficiently.
We will coordinate a program of events, including regular Sunday services, and ensure that the timings of these events are placed on the Church’s website.
Citygate’s proposals to change the use of the building will ensure that the listed building remains open and operational, ensuring a continuation of footfall to other local businesses.
